DETRITUS

The purpose of the series “Detritus” is to find beauty in the ordinary, in things that we thoughtlessly discard. Long before the modern trends to reduce one’s carbon footprint, my father trained us to always use everything to its fullest before throwing it away. He was a geophysicist, studying the earth’s crust, and was already well aware of the havoc humans were wreaking on the environment. He would play us recordings of whale songs, at least in part to remind us that we weren’t the only intelligent life forms on the planet, and he taught us how Native American tribes intentionally strove to leave Nature the way they found it. In addition, Dad was also a survivor of the Great Depression who never took for granted the availability of food and worldly goods. As kids, he drove us completely NUTS! We just wanted to throw away that extra bit of food and not have to polish our one pair of shoes every weekend. But by the time of his death, in my late twenties, the dye was cast.

The first piece in this series - “What’s Important Is On The Inside” is dedicated to my children who are constantly evolving into amazing people. I am extraordinarily proud that I get to be their parent.
